For Liu Wei, whose early career was largely shaped by underground exhibitions outside the art institution, the spatiality and significance of the exhibition site often forms the core of the work. Panorama is likewise a site-specific installation in response to the curvilinear structure of the Glass Pavilion and its permanent installation of Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, presenting a surreal spatial setting inspired by the ancient arenas. The work extends on the artist’s long-held interest in examining the systems of authority that govern our reality, as evidently seen in his earlier works that reconfigure the architectural landmarks. Highlighting the artist’s unique sense of form and material, Panorama strives an open platform in dialogue with the viewers.
